The Boston Climate Action Network (BCAN) is proud to announce Hessann Farooqi as our new Executive Director. He is the first person of color to lead the organization in our 24 year history. The son of immigrants, his appointment comes amid a wave of people of color taking leadership positions across environmental nonprofit organizations, including Manikka Bowman of the Nature Conservancy and Elischia Fludd of the Massachusetts Climate Action Network.
Farooqi previously served as BCAN’s Advocacy Director. He brings experience across the public and private sectors, having served in the Office of US Senator Ed Markey, a half-dozen political campaigns, and a Y Combinator-backed technology startup. Farooqi attended Boston University where he studied Economics and served as Student Body Vice President.
“We are thrilled to welcome Hessann as our new Executive Director. His skill and vision will be invaluable in taking our organization forward into our next chapter.” said the BCAN Board of Directors in a joint statement.
“The work that we do in these next several years will define the next several generations of life in this city. I love our city and I love this organization. With a full heart, I accept the position of Executive Director and I hope I’ll make you proud.” said Farooqi, addressing BCAN’s members.
